Unsurprisingly, a poll is a political four letter word.
As I stood in my nearby firehouse, about to cast my ballot, I wondered what the etymology of the word "poll" was. A quick search yielded some pretty clear results - "poll", as in the place where we go to vote, comes from the Greek "polis", which was the "place where the political occurred". This would have been a marker or a well known point in the middle of the city.
That was easier than trying to find good candidates to vote for.
